Welcome: 3 Minute Ukraine

Ukraine, the second-largest country by area in Europe after Russia, has become one of the most successful participants of the Eurovision Song Contest after joining in 2003.  In 2019, Ukraine withdrew from the competition due to a disagreement with the broadcaster.  Besides that incident, Ukraine has never missed a Grand Finale in all its years of competing.  In 16 appearances at Eurovision, 10 entries from Ukraine have finished within the top 10, 5 entries have finished in the top 3, and 2 have been winners. Having won Istanbul in 2004 with Rusiana and Stockholm in 2016 with Jamala, it's no doubt that Ukraine has been a fierce compeitior in the Eurovision Song Contest throughout the years.  

I hope you join me along on this journey as we learn about the Eurovision Song Contest and Ukraine's participation together.  I'm excited to learn more about how this competition has brought countries closer together and the cultural significance of this nation-wide event.  I am also interested to learn about the history of Ukraine and how their chosen songs play cultural and social significance to their country.

Making Noise with "Shum"

At the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Rotterdam, Ukraine was represented by Go_A with “Shum,” a song about performing a spring ritual that awakens nature for the sowing season to begin.  Go_A is a four-person electro-pop band that specializes in the retelling of Ukrainian folklore that has been passed down through many generations.  The band consists of lead singer Kateryna Pavlenko, multi-instrumentalist Taras Chevshenko, sopilka player Ihor Didenchuck, and guitarist Ivan Hryhoriak.  Together they share Ukrainian folklore that has previously only been passed down through word of mouth by combining it with electronic music to produce songs for the world to hear.   The song, “Shum,” originated as a combination of multiple versions of a Ukrainian folk song “A v nashoho shuma”(Fuster, 2021).  Due to its similarity to the original song and the fact that it was a minute too long, “Shum” had to be reworked in order to fit the Eurovision song requirements t...

National Identity of Ukraine

National identity is a means by which cultural homogeneity is shared amongst citizens. It offers a sense of belonging and togetherness within countries. National identity can be represented through traditions, culture, language, religion, political features and so on. Defining the national identity of Ukraine is difficult to decipher because of the longstanding battle of sovereignty that the country has had to face for decades now. Despite gaining independence from the Soviet Union 30 years ago, Ukraine has struggled to forge its own path as a self-governing country. Through expressions of language and religion, along with a look back at the history between Ukraine and Russia, we are able to discover the true national identity of Ukraine.
